Estimating Time With First Graders –  It Takes Time!

As a primary school teacher, you might have noticed that your students often ask the same questions about time. They want to know when lunchtime is, when they can go outside for recess, and when they can go home. But when you give them an answer, they always ask, “How long is that?” This is because they need help understanding how time works.

That’s why teaching your students how to estimate time is essential. When they learn how long a minute or an hour is, they’ll be better able to plan their day, stay motivated, and manage their time effectively. Without this skill, they might struggle to stay organized and focused, which can lead to problems later on. So, by teaching them about time estimation, you’ll set them up for future success.

How Long Does it Take? 1st Grade Time Worksheets

This printable resource pack is designed to help students understand the difference between subjective time and measured time. The time estimating activities included have students estimate the time needed to complete a given task.

We have included two versions of this activity for you to choose from, featuring two ways to help your students estimate time in seconds, minutes and hours. With each version, students will cut and paste pictures or words to show how long it takes to complete different actions.
