🪅What is Dia de Los Muertos? A Refresher

Before integrating Dia de Los Muertos activities into the classroom, you must teach the students the vocabulary and basic knowledge of the cultural traditions behind the celebration. Here are a few important facts about The Day of The Dead as a quick refresher.

  • In Spanish, Dia de Los Muertos translates to Day of the Dead.
  • It is a holiday in Mexico that honors the memories and lives of those who have passed away.
  • Families come together to reminisce about their loved ones who have died.
  • People adorn their homes with flowers and candles and create altars, also known as ofrendas, where they can leave offerings.
  • The celebration takes place on November 1st, believed to be the day when the dead would rise from their graves, and lasts two days.
